Primarily, Imitrex is used to cure headaches and head pains that are caused by nausea and sensitivity to light and sound. Imitrex works by making the blood vessels around the brain shrink to reduce blood flow and by reducing the chemicals in the body that cause headaches to begin with.
Typically, Imitrex is used to cure migraine headaches and can only cure headaches that are already happening. It cannot in any way prevent headaches from starting or from happening in the future.
You shouldn’t use Imitrex to cure standard headaches or headaches that cause a loss of movement within the body. Also, the use of Imitrex can only be authorized as a doctor, so don’t take Imitrex unless you’ve spoken to your doctor about your migraine headaches.
Because of the nature of Imitrex’s blood vessel tightening, you should not take it if you have a history of heart disease or other heart related problems. You should also not take Imitrex if you are allergic to the chemical known as sumatriptan. You shouldn’t take Imitrex within a 24 hour window of having previously taken another migraine medication or before taking another migraine medication.
If you are a new mother, you shouldn’t take Imitrex as it may make its way into your breast milk and cause harm to your child. As with any migraine medication, you should talk to your doctor before starting a prescription of Imitrex. When taking the medication, take it with a full glass of water and don’t crush the capsule. In some cases an Imitrex nasal spray may be issued instead of capsules. Before using it, you should blow your nose to clear your sinuses. You should also clear your nose after using the spray as well.
